On April 25, 2018, the Day of the Chuvash Language, an Interregional seminar – conference of librarians “Educational mission of the library in a multi-ethnic region” was held at the National Library of the Chuvash Republic. The event is timed to the 170th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Chuvash educator, organizer of public schools, teacher, creator of the new Chuvash alphabet Ivan Yakovlevich Yakovlev.
The seminar was attended by library workers from 10 regions of the Russian Federation – the republics of Bashkortostan, Mariy El, Udmurtia, Tatarstan and Khakassia, Kemerovo, Penza, Samara, Tumen, Ulyanovsk regions. The guests were warmly greeted by the Director of the National Library of the Chuvash Republic Svetlana Starikova, presenting Chuvashia as a region where representatives of different nationalities live in peace and harmony. She told about the activities of the National Library of the Chuvash Republic as a centre for preserving the national culture, about projects implemented in recent years and covering almost all areas of socio-cultural and spiritual and moral education.
In his speech Doctor of Philology Yuri Artemyev turned to the Spiritual Testament of I. Yakovlev and some issues of Chuvash culture. «Ivan Yakovlev is our everything. Whatever we’re talking about Ivan Yakovlev is involved in everything, he is present everywhere. The Chuvash culture, the culture of the neighbours, is based on this person», noted the prominent scientist.
The first Chuvash ABC-books, compiled by I. Yakovlev, marked the beginning of the origin of the Chuvash literary language. The Candidate of Philology Olga Skvortsova devoted her report to the development of modern Chuvash literature, noting its features, main trends and directions.
The deputy director Galina Bykova and the head of the department of national literature and bibliography Galina Solovyeva introduced the audience the informational resources (electronic library, multimedia publications, projects) of the National Library of the Chuvash Republic. Special attention should be paid to the projects: “Literary palette of Chuvashia: 100 books for reading”, “Literary map of Chuvashia”, “Calendar of significant and memorable dates”, a collection of multimedia editions “Name in the history of Chuvashia”, etc.
The librarians of the Interregional Centralized Library System named after M.Yu. Lermontov from St. Petersburg, as well as representatives of the Chuvash Cultural Society of St. Petersburg took part at the seminar by video link.
The curator of the project “Library of National Literatures” Nadezhda Dobryanskaya shared her invaluable experience in implementing the unique project: « This is the only public library in St. Petersburg where the literature of all nationalities living in our city is collected. The library was opened in December 2006 as a joint project of the ICLS named after M. Yu. Lermontov and national-cultural societies of St. Petersburg, united in the association “League of Nations.” The Chuvash fund of the library consists of 140 editions in the Chuvash and Russian languages. “
Great work in the preservation and promotion of national culture and art, language, heritage of outstanding figures of Chuvashia is conducted by the Chuvash Cultural Society of St. Petersburg under the leadership of Valerian Gavrilov. Valerian Anatolyevich stopped at the most striking events organized by the society: the opening of an interactive museum of Chuvash culture, a scientific and practical conference in honor of the day of the Chuvash language, round tables, meetings, exhibitions. Prominent representatives of journalism spoke about the role of Chuvash print publications, television and radio in the formation of the spiritual world of contemporaries: editor-in-chief of the magazine “Tuvan Atal” Lydia Filippova, editor-in-chief of the magazine “Folk School” Oleg Prokopiev, deputy director of the national television and radio company of Chuvashia Alexander Magarin. The seminar-meeting concluded with the signing of cooperation agreements for a number of libraries that serve the Chuvash population in the subjects of the Russian Federation, with the National Library of the Chuvash Republic.
