George III was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. His life and reign were marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdoms, much of the rest of Europe, and places farther afield in Africa, the Americas and Asia. Historical analysis of George III's life has gone through a «kaleidoscope of changing views» that have depended heavily on the prejudices of his biographers and the sources available to them. Until re-assessment occurred during the second half of the twentieth century, his reputation in the United States was one of a tyrant and in Britain he became «the scapegoat for the failure of imperialism». It has taken a long time to do justice to a man who found life difficult and whose suffering was appalling.

The Kings & Queens of Britain / John Cannon & Anne Hargreaves. - Oxford : Oxford university press, 2004. - 405 p. : il, карты, портр. - (Oxford Paperback Reference). - Bibliogr.: p. 366. - Index: p. 369-405. - ISBN 0-19-860956-6 : 388.62 р., 396.00 р.

First published in 2001 and reprinted with new covers in 2004, this work has been fully updated and details the pedigree, birth order, and political legacies of 600 English, Irish, and Welsh regents. Cannon (Aristocratic Century) and Hargreaves (formerly with Welsh National School of Medicine) briefly explore mythical rulers like Lear, Cole, and Arthur. Thereafter, content is organized chronologically, with entries running several paragraphs. Before the Norman Conquest, monarchs are categorized by region. After 1066, they appear under ruling House. Studded with informative black-and-white artifact illustrations, maps, portraits, and family trees, this extensive quick-reference complements Mike Ashley's British Kings and Queens.

William and Mary are perhaps the most under-rated British monarchs. Outside Northern Ireland (where William has become a – somewhat paradoxical – symbol of protestant resistance), the king has been largely forgotten by the general public, while Mary – if recognized at all – is known only as a constitutionally curious adjunct to her husband. Yet this royal pair ruled at a period of political transformation, and they were crucial to its surprising success. William and Mary succeeded because they showed skills of presentation, persuasion, and consensus-building which had been notably lacking in their Stuart predecessors. As we show, however, they honed these skills during their time in the Netherlands. It is therefore possible that England – if not Britain – was set on a path to greatness by the example of a foreign republic. Perhaps it has been reluctance to recognize this which has led William and Mary to be forgotten.

Sometimes called «The Virgin Queen», «Gloriana» or «Good Queen Bess», Elizabeth I was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Elizabeth set out to rule by good counsel, and she depended heavily on a group of trusted advisers led by William Cecil, Baron Burghley. One of her first moves as queen was the establishment of an English Protestant church, of which she became the Supreme Governor. This Elizabethan Religious Settlement later evolved into today's Church of England. It was expected that Elizabeth would marry and produce an heir so as to continue the Tudor line. She never did, however, despite numerous courtships. As she grew older, Elizabeth became famous for her virginity, and a cult grew up around her which was celebrated in the portraits, pageants, and literature of the day. Elizabeth's reign is known as the Elizabethan era, famous above all for the flourishing of English drama and for the seafaring prowess of English adventurer.

Since 1945, increased availability of archives and an avalanche of scholarship has transformed our understanding of the period of Henry’s ruling. Henry VIII can be known to a depth and his influence determined to an extent impossible with his predecessors. Under Henry VIII we can not only follow the processes of drafting but also much of the politics which lay behind the enactment. An even more striking instance is the religious changes of the reign. Here research has revealed a hitherto unrealized depth of Henry’s personal commitment and involvement.

More than a century ago after her death, Queen Victoria retains a strong grip on biographers’, academics’, and the public’s imagination. The intention of the authors in this biography is to ensure that Victoria herself was never swamped by the events in which she played a part, and to present an account of her developing personality alongside the developing role of constitutional monarchy under her reign. Victoria left huge quantities of written records, many of which have been published. It seemed important to let Victoria’s own voice be heard in the biography, and the text draws extensively from her own writings.

It is not always easy to be famous. And for a famous, beautiful princess like Diana, life was certainly very difficult at times. She was just twenty years old when she married Prince Charles, and from that moment millions of people around the world watched every move she made. And so did the photographers, who followed her everywhere - even on that terrible night in Paris when Diana's young life ended.

Bowle, J.
Henry VIII : a biography / J. Bowle. - London : George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1965. - 316 p. : il. - 15 р.

This book by Professor Bowle, in actuality, is a study of Henry VIII as a Machiavellian, and as a splendid figure; a tyrant, yes, but his tyranny was a product of the times, in the same sense that he himself was the embodiment of the state, and all his acts, good and bad, are viewed within such a perspective. Professor Bowle's canvas is vast but also discriminating. Henry, then, is an engine of history conveying England towards its full sovereignty, the destroyer of papal power, the unwitting forerunner of Protestantism, the maker of England's Navy (and thus its eventual colonial gambits); he summoned the Reformation Parliament, confiscated monastic properties, consolidated the gentry class, tackled (though not ably) the unemployment of the poor. But he was neither (as Professor Bowle points out) totalitarian or revolutionary; he drastically changed governmental procedures, he made and broke famous figures and adventurous foreign alliances - still he was an English "realist" to the core, terrifyingly pragmatic in the true little island tradition.
